Why Reconditioned IBCs Are the Smart Choice

A well-reconditioned IBC tote performs identically to a new one for the vast majority of applications. The HDPE bottle is chemically inert and cleans thoroughly with proper processes. The steel cage doesn't wear out from a single use. And the composite pallet can handle thousands of forklift cycles before showing signs of wear.

The only thing that changes is the price. Our reconditioned IBCs typically cost 30-50% less than equivalent new containers, and they ship with the same quality guarantee. For storage, mixing, irrigation, general industrial use, and many food-grade applications, reconditioned is the economically and environmentally superior option.

At Salt Lake IBC, reconditioning isn't an afterthought — it's the core of our business. We've invested in dedicated wash systems, pressure testing equipment, and trained inspection staff to ensure every reconditioned tote meets the standard our customers expect.

Our Reconditioning Process

Every IBC that enters our Woods Cross facility goes through a rigorous multi-step process before it earns the Salt Lake IBC seal of approval.

01

Intake & Assessment

Each incoming IBC is logged and assessed for reconditioning suitability. We evaluate the HDPE bottle for cracks, UV degradation, discoloration, and wall thickness. The steel cage is checked for broken welds, bent frame members, and corrosion. The pallet is inspected for runner damage and deck integrity. IBCs that don't meet our minimum standards are sent to our recycling line instead — we never sell a tote that can't be fully trusted.

02

First Wash — Hot Water Rinse

The bottle is thoroughly rinsed with 160°F (71°C) hot water to remove residual product. This first wash uses high-pressure nozzles that reach every interior surface, including the bottom corners where sediment tends to accumulate. The drain valve assembly is flushed separately. We monitor effluent water clarity to ensure the rinse is effective before proceeding.

03

Second Wash — Detergent Cleaning

A food-safe, biodegradable alkaline detergent is circulated through the bottle for a minimum of 15 minutes at 140°F (60°C). This breaks down fats, oils, proteins, sugars, and most chemical residues. For IBCs that previously held stubborn substances like adhesives, resins, or heavy oils, we use specialized solvent-based cleaning agents tailored to the specific contaminant.

04

Third Wash — Final Rinse & Sanitization

A final potable-water rinse removes all detergent residue. For food-grade IBCs, we follow this with a sanitization step using a peracetic acid or chlorine dioxide solution at FDA-approved concentrations. The bottle is then drained and air-dried in a controlled environment to prevent recontamination. At this point, the interior should be visibly clean and odor-free.

05

Pressure Testing

The fully assembled IBC is pressurized to 1.5 PSI (above the typical 0.5 PSI stacking load) and held for a minimum of 30 minutes. Any drop in pressure indicates a leak in the bottle, lid gasket, or valve assembly. Failed units are disassembled — the bottle is replaced if the cage and pallet are sound, or the entire unit is recycled. Only IBCs that hold pressure without loss proceed to final inspection.

06

Final Inspection & Grading

A trained technician performs a 20-point final inspection covering bottle clarity, wall integrity, cage structure, galvanization condition, valve function, lid seal, pallet stability, label removal, and overall cosmetic appearance. Each IBC is then assigned a grade (food-grade, industrial, or chemical) based on its condition and prior-use history. A new valve gasket is installed, and the unit receives a dated inspection sticker before entering our sales inventory.

Quality Control Checkpoints

Our 20-point inspection is the backbone of our quality program. Here are the specific checkpoints every reconditioned IBC must pass before it can be sold.

Bottle Wall Thickness

Measured at 4 points with ultrasonic gauge. Minimum 3.0 mm for food-grade, 2.5 mm for industrial.

Bottle Clarity & Odor

Visual inspection for discoloration, staining, and haziness. Smell test for residual odors. Food-grade must be clear and odor-free.

Bottle Crack Inspection

Full-surface inspection for hairline cracks, stress whitening, and UV degradation. Any cracking results in rejection.

Pressure Test (1.5 PSI / 30 min)

Sealed IBC held at 1.5 PSI for 30 minutes. Zero pressure drop tolerated. Tests bottle, lid seal, and valve seal simultaneously.

Valve Function Test

Valve opened and closed 10 times to verify smooth operation, full seal, and no dripping. Gasket replaced on every unit.

Lid Seal Integrity

Lid screwed to torque specification. Gasket inspected for compression set, tears, or contamination. Replaced if worn.

Cage Weld Inspection

Every visible weld point checked for cracks, breaks, or corrosion. Cage must support full stacking load without deformation.

Cage Galvanization

Zinc coating assessed for coverage and thickness. Surface rust is treated. Deep corrosion results in cage retirement.

Pallet Runner Straightness

Runners checked with straight-edge tool. Bent runners that prevent stable forklift engagement are replaced.

Pallet Deck Integrity

HDPE deck inspected for cracks, chips, and warping. Deck must be flat enough to support stable stacking.

Label Removal

All prior-use labels, stickers, and markings removed from bottle, cage, and pallet. Clean presentation for customer.

Final Grade Assignment

Based on all inspection results and prior-use documentation. Grade label and dated inspection sticker applied.

By the Numbers

Transparency matters. Here are our actual performance metrics from the past 12 months, covering everything from throughput capacity to defect rates and customer return data. We track these numbers rigorously because they drive our continuous improvement process.

Our Woods Cross facility processes an average of 300-400 IBCs per week through the full reconditioning pipeline. Of those, approximately 85% are approved for resale as reconditioned totes. The remaining 15% are diverted to our recycling program because they fail to meet our quality standards during intake assessment or at one of our inspection checkpoints.

Of the reconditioned IBCs we sell, our customer-reported defect rate is under 1.5%. The most common reported issues are slow-dripping valves (usually resolved with a gasket swap) and cosmetic concerns (staining that the customer considers unacceptable for their application). Structural failures, leaks, and safety-related defects are extremely rare at under 0.2%.

Batch Tracking & Documentation

Every reconditioned IBC that leaves our facility carries a dated inspection sticker with a unique batch/lot number. This number links back to our internal records, which document the IBC's complete reconditioning history: intake date, prior contents (when known), wash procedure used, inspection results, grade assigned, and the technician who performed the final sign-off.

For customers in regulated industries (food processing, agriculture, cleaning products), this documentation provides the traceability chain needed for quality audits and compliance verification. We can provide certificates of reconditioning, wash procedure records, and prior-use declarations upon request.

Batch tracking also enables us to respond quickly if a quality issue is ever reported. We can trace the specific lot, identify any other IBCs from the same batch, and take proactive measures. This system is modeled on food-safety traceability standards and demonstrates our commitment to accountability.

Inspection Sticker

Applied to every unit. Includes date, lot number, grade, and Salt Lake IBC branding. Visible through the cage for easy identification without opening.

Certificate of Reconditioning

Available upon request. Documents the wash process, inspection results, and grade. Useful for audits and quality management systems.

Prior-Use Declaration

For food-grade IBCs, we provide documentation of the prior contents when available. This helps customers verify compatibility with their product.

Wash Procedure Records

Detailed records of water temperatures, detergent concentrations, contact times, and sanitization steps. Available for customers with specific hygiene documentation needs.

What Our Customers Say

Real feedback from businesses and individuals who buy reconditioned IBCs from Salt Lake IBC.

We switched from new IBCs to Salt Lake IBC reconditioned totes two years ago and have not looked back. The food-grade units arrive clean, odor-free, and fully functional. We use them for our juice concentrate storage and have had zero contamination issues. The cost savings of roughly 40% per unit across 50+ totes per year has been substantial for our bottom line.

Brandon Hayes

Fruit processing company, Salt Lake Valley

I run a small hobby farm in Davis County and needed a dozen totes for irrigation water and liquid fertilizer. The team at Salt Lake IBC helped me pick the right grade for each application and delivered everything to my property the next day. The industrial-grade totes are perfect for my needs, and they cost a fraction of what I was quoted for new ones.

Derek Nelson

Davis County, UT

As a cleaning product manufacturer, we go through 20-30 IBCs per month. Salt Lake IBC set us up on a subscription refill program where they deliver clean reconditioned totes and pick up our empties on a weekly schedule. The consistency of quality has been excellent, and the trade-in credits on our returned totes make the effective cost even lower.

Kevin Marshall

Cleaning products manufacturer, West Valley City

I ordered three chemical-grade IBCs for waste oil collection at my automotive shop. They arrived with minor cosmetic staining on the bottles, which was clearly disclosed when I ordered. Structurally they are solid, the valves work perfectly, and for my application they are absolutely ideal. Saved me over $500 compared to buying new.

The Pricing Advantage

A brand-new 275-gallon IBC tote typically costs between $300 and $500 depending on configuration and supplier. Our reconditioned equivalents start significantly lower, with savings that scale as order volume increases.

For businesses that use IBCs in quantity — farms, food processors, cleaning product manufacturers, construction companies — the cumulative savings from choosing reconditioned over new can amount to thousands of dollars per year without any sacrifice in performance or reliability.

We also offer volume pricing, subscription refill programs, and trade-in credits for returning your used IBCs to us when you're done. This creates a true circular economy loop that benefits everyone: you get lower costs, we get feedstock for reconditioning, and the environment benefits from reduced waste.

Single Unit Savings

Even a single reconditioned IBC saves you 30-50% compared to buying new. Perfect for small operations, hobby farms, and homestead projects.

Bulk Order Discounts

Orders of 10+ units receive additional volume discounts. We work with businesses of all sizes and can accommodate orders from 10 to 1,000+ IBCs.

Trade-In Credit Program

Return your used IBCs to us and receive credit toward your next purchase. We inspect incoming totes and offer fair trade-in value based on condition.

Subscription Refill Program

For businesses with recurring IBC needs, our subscription program delivers clean totes on a regular schedule and picks up empties at the same time.

Our Quality Guarantee

Every reconditioned IBC we sell is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. If your tote arrives with a leak, a defective valve, structural damage we missed, or any issue that prevents it from performing as described, we will replace it at no cost or issue a full refund.
