How to Choose the Right IBC

Answer these key questions and we will point you to the best product line. Still unsure? Our team is one phone call away from a personalized recommendation.

What will you store?

Food products, potable water, or pharmaceutical ingredients require food-grade reconditioned or new IBCs. Industrial chemicals, fertilizers, and non-potable water can use industrial-grade reconditioned totes. Garden projects and rainwater are best served by our garden line.

Recommendation: Food/pharma: New IBC or food-grade reconditioned. Industrial: Reconditioned. Garden/rain: Garden line.

Do you need UN/DOT certification?

If you transport hazardous materials classified under 49 CFR, you are legally required to use a new, UN-certified container. Reconditioned IBCs lose their UN certification after first fill. For storage-only or non-hazmat transport, reconditioned is the cost-effective choice.

Recommendation: Hazmat transport: New IBC only. Everything else: Reconditioned saves 30-50%.

How many do you need?

Single units are available for immediate pickup. Orders of 10 or more qualify for bulk pricing tiers. Orders over 50 units receive our best per-unit rates plus free local delivery within the Wasatch Front. For recurring needs, ask about our subscription refill program.

Recommendation: 1-9 units: Standard pricing. 10-49: Tier 1 discount. 50+: Best rate + free delivery.

Is this for a one-time project or ongoing use?

One-time projects like garden beds, rainwater systems, or emergency water storage work great with our garden line or budget-tier reconditioned totes. Ongoing industrial or agricultural use calls for our premium reconditioned or new IBCs that are built for repeated fill cycles.

Recommendation: One-time: Garden or chemical-grade. Ongoing: Food-grade reconditioned or new.

Do you need modifications?

If your application requires custom valve placement, additional ports, specific paint colors, interconnected plumbing, or non-standard cutting, our custom solutions team can modify any IBC to your exact specifications. Standard IBCs are off-the-shelf and ship immediately.

Recommendation: Standard needs: Off-the-shelf reconditioned or new. Special needs: Custom solutions.

What is your budget?

Our product range spans from $75 for a basic garden planter to $550+ for a brand-new, fully configured IBC with accessories. Reconditioned totes offer the best value for most applications, delivering 90-95% of new IBC performance at 50-70% of the cost.

Recommendation: Tight budget: Chemical-grade reconditioned. Mid-range: Food-grade reconditioned. Premium: New IBC.

Seasonal Availability

IBC inventory fluctuates with supply and demand cycles. Here is what to expect throughout the year so you can plan your purchases and secure the best pricing.

Spring (Mar - May)

High Demand

Agricultural season kicks off. Farmers, ranchers, and landscapers stock up on totes for fertilizers, irrigation water, and herbicide storage. Garden planter demand peaks. Order early to guarantee your preferred grade and quantity.

Summer (Jun - Aug)

Peak Demand

Construction season drives demand for job-site water, dust suppression, and concrete admixture storage. Garden and rain collection products sell fast. New IBC lead times may extend to 3-4 weeks. Best time to sell back used IBCs for top trade-in value.

Fall (Sep - Nov)

Best Selection

Supply catches up with demand. Our inventory is at its highest as agricultural customers return empties. Excellent time to buy reconditioned totes at competitive prices. Heating blanket and insulation jacket demand begins to rise.

Winter (Dec - Feb)

Steady Supply

Indoor storage and industrial applications maintain steady demand. Heating accessories are essential for outdoor IBCs. Lower competition for inventory means faster fulfillment. Great time to order ahead for spring. New IBC pricing may be lower.

Most Popular Bundles

Our most frequently ordered product combinations, pre-configured for common use cases. Bundles include everything you need to get started and are priced to save you money versus buying each component separately.

Our Quality Promise

Every product that leaves our Woods Cross facility meets rigorous standards. Here's what you can expect from Salt Lake IBC.

Triple-Wash Process

Reconditioned totes undergo three rounds of high-pressure cleaning with food-safe detergents, followed by thorough rinsing and drying.

Pressure Testing

Every IBC is pressurized to verify there are no leaks in the bottle, valve assembly, or lid seal before it ships.

Visual & Structural Inspection

Trained technicians inspect cage welds, pallet integrity, UV degradation levels, and bottle wall thickness on every unit.

Guaranteed Satisfaction

If a product doesn't meet your expectations, we'll replace it or refund your purchase. No fine print.

Good for Your Business.
Better for the Planet.

Choosing reconditioned IBCs over new containers saves an average of 58 kg of CO2 emissions per unit. When you factor in the energy savings from not manufacturing new HDPE plastic and galvanized steel, the environmental impact is significant.

Our closed-loop reconditioning system ensures that 97% of every IBC we handle is either returned to productive use, recycled into raw materials, or creatively repurposed into garden beds and rainwater collection systems.

By choosing Salt Lake IBC products, your company can reduce its Scope 3 supply chain emissions and demonstrate a measurable commitment to environmental responsibility. We provide documentation of environmental savings upon request for sustainability reporting.

Industry-Specific Recommendations

Every industry has unique requirements for bulk liquid storage and handling. Here is what we recommend for the six industries we serve most frequently in Utah and the Intermountain West.

Food & Beverage Processing

Recommended Products

New IBC (pharma/first-fill) or food-grade reconditioned

Key Accessories

Stainless steel ball valves, PTFE gaskets, insulation jackets for temperature-sensitive products, spill containment pallets for FSMA compliance.

Industry Notes

Food-grade reconditioned IBCs must come from a documented food-product chain of custody. We track prior contents and provide traceability documentation for food-safety audits. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant HDPE.

Agriculture & Irrigation

Recommended Products

Reconditioned IBCs (industrial or food-grade)

Key Accessories

Garden hose adapters, cam lock fittings for pump hookups, float valves for livestock waterers, Y-splitters for dual hose runs, dust caps for field storage.

Industry Notes

Most agricultural applications work perfectly with industrial-grade reconditioned totes. Fertilizer storage, herbicide mixing, and irrigation water do not require food-grade certification. Bulk discounts are popular with farms ordering 10+ units per season.

Chemical Manufacturing

Recommended Products

New IBCs (for hazmat) or chemical-grade reconditioned

Key Accessories

PTFE-seated ball valves, cam lock fittings in stainless steel, quad spill containment pallets, spill kits, breather vents for pressure equalization.

Industry Notes

Always verify HDPE chemical compatibility before use. We provide a chemical resistance reference chart. For regulated hazmat transport under 49 CFR, new UN-certified IBCs are required. Chemical-grade reconditioned totes are suitable for non-hazmat chemical storage.

Construction & Concrete

Recommended Products

Reconditioned IBCs (industrial grade)

Key Accessories

Cam lock fittings for quick hookup, lay-flat hoses, single IBC spill pallets, containment berms for field use, heating blankets for winter pours.

Industry Notes

Construction sites use IBCs for water supply, dust suppression, equipment wash-down, and concrete admixture storage. Industrial-grade reconditioned totes are the go-to choice. Containment berms are often required by site stormwater permits.

Breweries & Wineries

Recommended Products

New IBCs or food-grade reconditioned

Key Accessories

Tri-clamp adapters for sanitary connections, stainless steel ball valves, EPDM gaskets, insulation jackets for fermentation temperature control.

Industry Notes

Craft breweries and wineries throughout the Wasatch Front use IBCs for bulk ingredient storage (malt extract, juice concentrates, cleaning solutions) and sometimes for secondary fermentation or bright tank overflow. Food-grade is essential for anything contacting the product.

Landscaping & Nurseries

Recommended Products

Reconditioned IBCs (industrial grade) and garden planters

Key Accessories

Garden hose adapters, spigots for gravity dispensing, float valves for automatic watering, Y-splitters, rain barrel conversion kits.

Industry Notes

Landscapers use IBCs as mobile water tanks on their trucks and trailers for job-site watering, as well as for bulk storage of liquid fertilizers and pest treatments at their yards. Our garden planter line is popular with nurseries as display planters and customer-facing retail products.
